Phase II of Broussard’s South Bernard Road expansion.

Broussard, LA, June 17, 2019 –
In January, the Broussard City Council voted to amend the 2018-19 operating budget by adding an additional $2.9 million for the second phase of the South Bernard Road expansion, and now work has begun on the new four-lane. Also funded was the water-line engineering for the entire length of the road.

The first phase, which was completed in 2017, included a new bridge and a roundabout at Fairfield Drive and South Bernard Road, and it connected Fairfield to Albertson Parkway at a total cost of just under $6 million. The second phase will connect South Bernard from Albertson Parkway to Main Street/LA-182 in Broussard.

The contractor has started clearing the road right-of-way in a section off Main Street. Once all clearing is complete, the contractor will establish drainage before bringing in fill for the road grade, constructing the roadway base, and then laying asphalt. The extension is projected to be completed substantially by March 2020.

The main purpose of this expansion is to alleviate traffic congestion on South Morgan and Main Street. “Broussard’s development and population continues on an upward trajectory, and our infrastructure must be ready to handle current demands and those of future growth,” says Mayor Ray Bourque. “South Bernard will be a major traffic artery, which will not only ease our residents’ commutes but also stimulate economic development along its corridor.”

The City of Broussard also recently announced plans to install a monument to Sgt. Patrick Williamson at the new roundabout at South Bernard and Fairfield. Sgt. Williamson, a Broussard native, was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 at the age of 24.
